Polène Leather Care Guide —
How to Clean & Protect Your Bag

A well-maintained Polène bag will look beautiful for a decade. The key is knowing which leather type you have and using the right products. This guide covers everything — from daily care to stain emergencies.

Step 1: Identify Your Polène Leather Type

Polène offers three main leather finishes. Each requires a slightly different care approach. Check your original product page or dust bag label if you are unsure.

Smooth Calfskin

The most common Polène leather. A flat, even surface with a natural sheen. Develops a patina over time. Available in most colours including caramel, black, taupe, and ecru.

Care: Wipe with dry cloth, condition annually, protect with leather spray.

Grained / Textured Calfskin

A calfskin leather that has been embossed or treated to create a pebbled or structured surface. More scratch-resistant than smooth leather. Common in the Numéro Dix and Cyme ranges.

Care: Soft brush for dust, damp cloth for marks, condition every 12 months.

Velvet Calf

Polène's most luxurious and delicate finish. The leather surface is buffed to create a velvety, matte texture similar to nubuck. NOT true suede — it is calfskin leather. Requires specialist care and should not contact water.

Care: Suede brush only, suede protector spray, keep dry always.

Daily Care Routine (3 Simple Steps)

These three habits will keep your Polène bag in excellent condition with minimal effort:

01

Empty and wipe before storing

Each time you store your bag, empty it fully and give the exterior a light wipe with a clean, dry microfibre cloth. This removes oils and light dust that can build up over time and dull the leather's surface.

02

Store it properly

Keep your Polène bag in its original dust bag when not in use. Stuff it lightly with tissue paper or a small pillow insert to maintain the shape — never use newspaper, which can transfer ink. Store upright in a cool, dry location away from direct sunlight.

03

Rotate your bags

If you carry the same Polène bag every day, the leather and hardware will show wear faster. Rotating between two bags, even weekly, significantly extends the life of each one.

How to Clean Smooth Calfskin Polène Bags

Smooth calfskin is the most forgiving Polène leather type to clean. For everyday maintenance and light marks:

  1. 1.Dampen a clean soft cloth (microfibre is ideal) with clean water — it should be barely moist, not wet.
  2. 2.Gently wipe the surface in small circular motions. Never scrub.
  3. 3.Follow immediately with a dry cloth to absorb any moisture.
  4. 4.Allow to air dry fully before storing — never use a hair dryer or place near a radiator.
  5. 5.Every 6–12 months, apply a small amount of leather conditioner (Saphir Renovateur or Collonil 1909 are widely recommended) with a soft cloth. Buff lightly to finish.

A light protective spray (such as Collonil Carbon Pro or Kiwi Leather Protect) applied before first use and every few months creates an invisible barrier against water and minor stains.

How to Clean Grained Polène Leather

Grained leather is more durable and scratch-resistant than smooth leather. The process is similar, but the textured surface can trap dirt in the grain patterning:

  1. 1.Start with a soft-bristled brush (a clean make-up brush or a dedicated leather brush) to loosen any dust or debris from the grain.
  2. 2.Wipe with a barely damp cloth, following the grain direction where possible.
  3. 3.For marks in the grain lines, use a toothpick or a soft-bristle brush with a tiny amount of leather cleaner.
  4. 4.Dry with a clean cloth and allow to air dry fully.
  5. 5.Condition annually with a cream conditioner designed for textured leather.

How to Care for Polène Velvet Calf Leather

Important: Never use water or any liquid cleaner on velvet calf leather.

Velvet calf is Polène's most luxurious leather type, with a velvety matte surface that requires dry-only care:

  1. 1.Use a dedicated suede brush or a velvet brush to gently remove dust and restore the nap after use.
  2. 2.Brush in one direction to keep the texture uniform. If the nap becomes flattened, brush gently back and forth to lift it.
  3. 3.Before first use, apply a suede/nubuck protector spray generously and allow to dry for 30 minutes before use.
  4. 4.Store exclusively in the dust bag — never leave velvet calf bags exposed on a shelf where fabric or surface contact can flatten the texture.
  5. 5.If your velvet calf bag gets wet, blot immediately with a clean dry cloth (never rub) and let it dry naturally. Do not brush until fully dry.

Rain Protection: What to Do If Your Polène Gets Wet

Smooth and grained calfskin bags can handle light rain reasonably well, especially if treated with a leather protector spray. If your bag gets wet:

DO

Blot (don't rub) with a clean dry cloth immediately.

DO

Reshape the bag and let it air dry naturally at room temperature.

DO

Apply conditioner once fully dry to restore moisture.

DON'T

Use a hair dryer or place near direct heat — this cracks leather.

DON'T

Rub the wet area — this spreads the water mark.

DON'T

Use velvet calf bags in any rain whatsoever.

Stain Removal: Ink, Oil & Makeup

Ink / pen

Act immediately. On smooth leather: dab (never rub) with a cotton bud very lightly dampened with isopropyl alcohol or a dedicated leather ink remover. Test on a hidden area first. On velvet calf: consult a professional leather cleaner — do not attempt home treatment.

Oil / grease

Sprinkle a small amount of talcum powder or cornstarch on the stain and leave for several hours to absorb the oil. Brush away gently. Repeat if needed. Do not use water or cloth on fresh oil — this spreads the stain.

Makeup / foundation

A mild leather cleaner on a cotton bud or soft cloth, dabbed gently on the mark, usually works well for foundation and powder. Lipstick can be more stubborn — remove as much as possible with a dry cloth first, then treat with leather cleaner.

Dye transfer (from dark jeans etc.)

Dye transfer is one of the hardest stains to treat on light-coloured Polène bags. A leather dye remover product (used very carefully) can help. Prevention is far better than cure: avoid pressing new dark denim against a light-coloured Polène bag for extended periods.

Long-Term Storage Guide

Proper storage is just as important as regular cleaning, especially for bags you do not use daily:

  • Always store in the original Polène dust bag — this protects against dust, light exposure, and accidental scratches.
  • Stuff the bag with acid-free tissue paper or a soft fabric insert to maintain the shape. Never use newspaper.
  • Store upright (handles up) on a shelf or in a box. Avoid stacking bags — prolonged pressure deforms structured leather.
  • Keep away from direct sunlight and artificial UV light, which fades and dries out leather over time.
  • Avoid storing in plastic bags or airtight containers — leather needs to breathe.
  • Avoid areas of high humidity (bathrooms, attics, basements) which can cause mould on the leather lining.
  • If storing for more than three months, apply a light coat of conditioner before putting away.

What NOT to Do — Common Mistakes

These are the most common care mistakes that cause avoidable damage to Polène bags:

Baby wipes

Contain chemicals and moisture that dry out and discolour calfskin leather.

Alcohol wipes / hand sanitiser

Strips the natural oils from the leather, causing dryness and cracking over time.

Household cleaning sprays

Far too harsh for leather — will permanently damage the surface finish.

Direct sunlight storage

Causes fading and dries out the leather, leading to cracking at fold points.

Overstuffing

Strains seams, deforms the bag's shape, and stresses the closure hardware.

Plastic bag storage

Traps moisture against the leather, leading to mould or mildew growth.

Nail varnish remover

Acetone will instantly and irreversibly damage any Polène leather finish.

Machine washing / soaking

Leather should never be submerged in water — this will permanently ruin it.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I clean my Polène bag?

For smooth or grained Polène leather, wipe gently with a soft dry cloth for everyday dust, or a barely damp cloth for light marks. For stubborn marks, use a small amount of leather cleaner designed for calfskin. Never use baby wipes, alcohol, or household cleaners — these can dry out or discolour the leather.

Can I get my Polène bag wet in the rain?

Light rain is fine for smooth and grained calfskin Polène bags, especially if you have applied a leather protector spray. If your bag gets wet, blot (never rub) with a clean dry cloth and allow to dry naturally away from heat. Velvet calf bags should be kept away from any moisture — they cannot be cleaned with water.

How do I care for Polène velvet calf leather?

Polène velvet calf is not true suede but behaves similarly. Use a soft suede brush to lift the nap and remove dry dust. Never use water, damp cloths, or liquid cleaners on velvet calf. Apply a suede protector spray before first use. Store in the dust bag when not in use to prevent surface flattening.

How do I remove an ink stain from my Polène bag?

Act immediately. On smooth leather, a small amount of leather cleaner or isopropyl alcohol on a cotton bud (applied very carefully and sparingly) can lift fresh ink. On velvet calf, ink stains are very difficult to remove at home — consult a professional leather cleaner. Never rub the stain — always dab.

Should I condition my Polène bag?

Yes, applying a leather conditioner once or twice a year keeps the full-grain calfskin supple and prevents cracking, especially on bags used daily. Use a cream or balm conditioner designed for smooth calfskin (such as Saphir Renovateur or Collonil 1909). Avoid petroleum-based products.
