How to Care for Your Polène Leather Bag — Complete Guide

Daily care (do this every time you put the bag down)

1. Wipe the leather with a soft, dry cloth. Removes the dust and fingerprints that build up during a day of use.
2. Empty the contents — never store with random crumbs, receipts, or pens that can mark the lining.
3. Stuff lightly with tissue paper if you won't use it for > 48h. Maintains shape, especially for structured models like the Cyme and Mokki.
4. Store in the dust bag. Polène's cream cotton dust bag is breathable — better than plastic, which traps humidity.

Weekly care

1. Spot-clean any small marks with a barely damp microfiber cloth. Wipe in the direction of the grain, not against.
2. Brush the brass hardware lightly with a dry toothbrush if it's gathered any tarnish.
3. Check the stitching for any loose threads. A snipped (not pulled) loose thread is the right move; pulling can unravel the seam.

Monthly care

1. Condition the leather with a high-quality colourless leather conditioner (Saphir Renovateur or Collonil Lederbalsam are the gold standard). A pea-size amount per application, worked in evenly with a soft cloth.
2. Buff lightly after 5 minutes. The leather should look slightly more saturated, not greasy.
3. Re-condition the strap specifically — straps take more friction than the body of the bag.

Every 4–6 months

1. Apply weatherproofing spray (Collonil Carbon Pro or Saphir Super Invulner) — colourless, water-and-stain repellent. Apply outdoors, let dry 12 hours.
2. Inspect the lining — wipe out any debris with a barely damp cloth. Polène's cotton lining can be hand-washed if needed; do not machine-wash.

What NOT to do

• ❌ Never use baby wipes. They contain alcohol that strips natural oils and lightens the colour.
• ❌ Never use saddle soap on full-grain. It's for finished/coated leather, not Polène's full-grain.
• ❌ Never store in a humid bathroom or near a radiator. Both age leather quickly.
• ❌ Never use a hairdryer to dry wet leather. Air-dry only, away from direct heat.
• ❌ Never iron the dust bag while the bag is inside it. Sounds obvious, has happened.

Specific issues

Water spots: dab (don't rub) with a barely damp cloth, then leather conditioner. Most water spots on quality calfskin disappear with conditioner.

Pen ink: the hardest to remove. Try Cadillac Leather Conditioner first; for tough cases, take to a leather specialist. Don't try alcohol or acetone — both will lift the pigment.

Discoloration from clothing: light denim transfer is common on lighter colours (Camel, Craie). Immediate cleaning with a damp cloth + conditioner usually removes it. Long-term transfer requires professional restoration.

Hardware tarnish: very rare on Polène's brass. If it happens, use a soft brass polishing cloth (not chemical polish) — once, lightly.

How long should a Polène bag last?

With this routine, 10–15+ years. The Cyme and Numéro Neuf models in our customer photos at 5 years still look excellent — the leather has just developed character (a darker patina, slightly softer feel).

Without care, leather quality drops noticeably at 18–24 months. The brass develops greenish tarnish, the leather dries and cracks, the stitching becomes brittle.

The 10 minutes/week is genuinely worth it.
